Eric Northshield's unexpected death
Donation protected
"Swimmer, Coach and Lifeguard" is how Eric described himself on Instagram but this is an understatement. He was deeply caring, volunteering on many different teams, and generous with his time, which was abruptly cut short on June 19th when he passed away in intensive care 7 days after suffering a severe stroke.
His sudden passing has left his family, friends, and fellow swimmers heartbroken. Organizing a loved one's affairs after their passing is hard. Particularly when it happens unexpectedly: no to-do list, no access to accounts, unknown paid subscriptions, unforeseeable future bills to cover, etc.
Unfortunately Eric's dual Belgian and American citizenship means double the administrative burden for his family. (Processing the death of a US citizen overseas can take over a year and be as costly as it is lengthy involving notaries, sworn translators, etc.)
While Eric’s family has already cover his funeral costs, they are fundraising to help cover medical bills from intensive care and extra expenses caused by his sudden passing, including repairing damage to his rental apartment caused during his stroke.
Any surplus funds will be donated to a stroke or brain research charity in his memory.
