COSTRUIAMO UNA SCUOLA INSIEME IN ZAMBIA
Siamo Maria, Emiliano e Alessio, tre volontari impegnati in un progetto che sostiene giovani agricoltori in un’area rurale dello Zambia, in Africa. Stiamo raccogliendo fondi per completare la costruzione di una scuola primaria dove più della metà degli studenti è costretta a seguire le lezioni in un ambiente non sano.
Con il tuo aiuto, possiamo offrire un'educazione a molti altri bambini!
Una delle comunità con cui lavoriamo si chiama Luuma. Fin dal primo incontro abbiamo notato un grande edificio lasciato a metà e molti bambini che facevano lezione in una struttura non adatta: un pollaio appartenente ai giovani agricoltori.
A pagare il prezzo di questa situazione sono le persone più vulnerabili della comunità: i bambini, costretti a studiare in un ambiente poco sano; e i giovani agricoltori, che non possono utilizzare la struttura per la loro attività.
Abbiamo sentito un forte senso di ingiustizia e abbiamo capito che qualcosa poteva essere fatto. Gli abitanti della comunità ci hanno raccontato che, di fronte all’aumento degli studenti, avevano deciso di raccogliere fondi, materiali e manodopera per costruire tre nuove aule.
Purtroppo l’anno scorso la zona è stata colpita da una grave siccità e, a causa della mancanza di risorse, dato che la comunità vive quasi esclusivamente di agricoltura, i lavori si sono fermati.
Attualmente la scuola ha 215 studenti tra i 6 e i 12 anni, di cui 150 fanno lezione nel pollaio. Una volta completato il progetto di costruzione delle tre nuove classi, la scuola potrà accogliere fino a 400 bambini. Inoltre, i giovani agricoltori potranno finalmente riavere il pollaio e riprendere la loro attività.
Nelle aree rurali, istruzione e sicurezza alimentare non sono garantite. Le condizioni di vita sono già difficili a causa della mancanza di acqua potabile, elettricità e della diffusione di malattie. Sostenere questo progetto significa avere un impatto concreto su questi due aspetti fondamentali della vita della comunità di Luuma.
Non sappiamo ancora quanti fondi riusciremo a raccogliere. Per questo, insieme alla comunità, abbiamo deciso di stabilire alcune priorità per evitare che l’edificio resti ancora inutilizzato:
- costruire il tetto e il pavimento, così che i bambini possano finalmente lasciare il pollaio;
- installare porte e finestre, per creare un ambiente più sano in cui studiare;
- intonacare e dipingere l’edificio, per dare alla scuola un aspetto dignitoso e accogliente.
Il nostro sogno sarebbe costruire tutta la scuola, ma vogliamo essere realistici e concreti. Per questo abbiamo fissato cinque obiettivi, riportati nel grafico sopra.
Abbiamo già raggiunto il nostro primo obiettivo e la prossima settimana inizieremo a costruire il tetto!
Il secondo obiettivo è fare il pavimento, un passo fondamentale per rendere finalmente l’edificio utilizzabile. Per questo abbiamo bisogno di raccogliere €2.500 entro la fine di Maggio per poter finire i lavori prima della prossima stagione delle piogge.
Questo progetto non riguarda solo la costruzione di un edificio. Si tratta di offrire ai bambini un luogo sicuro dove imparare, crescere e immaginare il proprio futuro.
In questa provincia dello Zambia esiste una parola molto importante: “Tujipamo”, che significa “siamo insieme”. Tujipamo, lavorando fianco a fianco con la comunità di Luuma — e anche tu puoi farne parte.

LET’S BUILD A SCHOOL TOGETHER IN ZAMBIA
We're Maria, Emiliano and Alessio, three volunteers in a project that supports young farmers in a rural area in the North-Western Province of Zambia, Africa. We are fundraising to complete the building of a primary school where currently more than half of the students are forced to attend class in an unhealthy environment.
With your help, we can offer education to many more children!
One of the communities we're working with is Luuma. Since our first meeting, we've noticed a large building half-finished and many children having classes in a structure not suitable for education: a poultry house that belongs to the young farmers.
The ones paying the price of this situation are the most fragile members of the community: the children having classes in an unhealthy environment and the young farmers seeing their business stuck.
We felt a strong sense of injustice and thought that something could be done. The people of the community told us that, due to an increasing demand of students, they decided to collect funds, materials and manpower to start building three new classrooms.
Unfortunately, last year the area suffered a drought and, due to a lack of resources, they couldn't continue the construction, since they depend on farming as their sole source of income.
At the moment the school has 215 students, aged 6 to 12, of whom 150 are having classes in the poultry house. Once the project is finished, and the three classrooms are ready, the school will be able to welcome a total of 400 children. Furthermore, the young farmers will be given back the structure to resume their business activity.
Education and food security aren't guaranteed in the rural area, where living conditions are already hard due to the lack of drinking water, electricity, and the presence of diseases. Supporting this project will have a big impact on these two essential aspects of the livelihood of the Luuma community.
Since we aren’t sure how much money we'll be able to collect, we've decided together with the community to make a list of priorities:
- building the roof and the floor would allow the children to move out of the poultry house;
- installing doors and windows would create a healthier environment in which to have classes;
- plastering and painting would give a better image of the school from the outside.
Ideally it would be wonderful to build the whole school, but we prefer to be realistic and pragmatic — that's why we've set the five goals in the graphic above.
We already achieved our first goal and the next week we’ll start building the roof. Our second goal is to lay the flooring, a crucial step to make the structure usable. For this we need to collect €2.500 within the end of May in order to complete the work before the next rainy season.
This project is not only about building a structure. It is about giving children a safe environment where they can learn, grow, and imagine their future.
In this Province of Zambia, people have a concept called "Tujipamo", meaning "we are together". Tujipamo means working shoulder to shoulder with the Luuma community — and you could be part of it too.
