Protecting Nosara Beaches - Costas Verdes

Donation protected
Hi!  I hope you will join me in helping to keep the place we  all love - Nosara, Costa Rica - healthy and beautiful.

This summer I was awarded a fellowship to work in Nosara for an organization called Costas Verdes. Due to COVID-19, I have to postpone the fellowship. However, I wanted to help Costas Verdes now, when they need help the most.  So I am working independently from home to help fundraise for Costas Verdes.

What is Costas Verdes?
You may not have realized it at the time, but every time you walked to the beach at Playa Guiones, Pelada, or Camaronal all of the small trees and saplings you see were planted and nurtured by Costas Verdes. Costas Verdes has planted trees almost 50 acres of coastline that was previously barren due to animal grazing and agricultural uses. These thousands of new trees provide shade thus enhance turtle nesting grounds and produce food and shelter for native fauna such as the Howler monkeys. In 2019 alone, Costas Verdes planted 5,276 trees, 3,000 of which are in Guiones.  They  started two new projects in Pelada and Camaronal, engaged over engaged 909 volunteers, and involved 10 local schools. Costas Verdes has added 23% native forest coverage to the coast in Playa Guiones alone.

How Can We Help? By Giving Back to Nosara, One Tree at a Time.
Like so many non-profit organizations, COVID-19 has decimated Costas Verdes’s revenue. Costa Verdes is funded almost entirely by local businesses, hotels, and restaurants. And while these businesses remain loyal to the cause, with the shut-down, they have frozen all 2020 charitable donations. But Costa Verdes’ mission must continue. Operating at a mere 10% of its budget, Costas Verdes needs our help!

One plant costs bout $20 to take from a seed to a healthy growing tree on the beach. This cost includes staff, supplies, labor, and all other operations.  So with this, my goal is simple: Raise $10,000 over the summer to ensure that Costas Verdes can continue to operate for 2020 and plant and care for as many trees as possible.  Together, I know we can do this!  $10,000 means 500 healthy trees!

COVID-19 has severely impacted many worthy non-profit organizations and businesses. But there are few communities like Nosara that have asked for so little yet given us so much. I hope that you will choose to join me in this meaningful effort.

Stay healthy & thank you so much for your generous support!

Sincerely,
Marshall Sinkler
