Dear friends,
Cosmos needs help.
With heavy hearts we have watched over the past many months our beautiful 20-year-old son sink deeper and deeper into his own inner struggles, which led to increasingly heavy substance abuse. Finally we knew he had to get help. And, thankfully, he agreed.
After completing two and a half months in the wilderness in Utah with a program called Elements, which treats young adults like him facing similar life challenges—substance abuse, anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction--he's now at Mana Toa, a new aftercare program in Oahu, HI. Through generous help from the director, Patrick Ah Mu, Cosmos has been offered a substantial scholarship toward the cost of the program.
However, we still have funds to raise. Our health insurance is, like many, woefully inadequate when it comes to mental healthcare coverage and will not reimburse us for any of the costs. So, now, we are turning to our larger community of friends and family to ask for assistance.
We do so because we believe in Cosmos—his deeply compassionate nature, his ability (and passion) to connect with and help people who are in pain, his belief in justice, and his desire to have a positive impact on the world. We believe in his life, his future, and we also know this is an extremely challenging and difficult time for adolescents and young adults everywhere. So many are in crisis—our children and our hope—and they need the support and love of their family, their friends, and their community.
Mana Toa is designed to connect young men with themselves and with their higher purpose through a rigorous program of outdoor activity, martial arts, community service, and music and craft. Patrick believes passionately in the capabilities of young men when they are supported with love, therapeutic guidance, community engagement, and hard work. He is deeply committed to help those who have seen challenges and difficulties in their young lives.
Cosmos will likely be at Mana Toa as a participating client for about three months, until February of 2020. We're doing our best to raise the funds to cover his stay before he finishes treatment. All funds will go directly toward expenses incurred for Cosmos's treatment and growth.
