On December 20th, I was admitted to the ER with excruciating pain, which ended up being appendicitis. Little did I know that appendicitis would be just the beginning of something much greater and much more life-altering.

A day after being admitted and having surgery for appendicitis, I learned that I had two forms of cancer; CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia) and a Neuro Endocrine Tumor. The latter of which caused my appendicitis.

This prompted me to complete a self-referral to MD Anderson in hopes that a 2nd opinion would bring better news. It did not…..and so began my cancer journey.

A million things go through your mind when faced with this news; career, friends, family, finances, future health, children, personal journey, etc…..I wish I could say I handled this as should, but that would not be the truth. I am learning every day how to cope with this news myself and allow my support system to assist, but it is extremely difficult. Thankfulness does not begin to describe the emotions I have for those supporting me!!

My kids wanted me to start this Fundraising project and wanted to set it up themselves. However, I wanted this to come from me. This is probably the toughest thing I have ever done or gone through and yes that includes going through the fight of curing my cancer. It is extremely difficult to be reduced to asking for financial assistance, but with every appointment comes a cost. With every procedure comes a cost. With every trip, meal, treatment, a cost that I didn't prepare for. A cost that I couldn't prepare for.

As much as my pride wants me to keep this to myself and just deal with it, I have asked God to soften my heart. To let me allow people to help. To ask people to help.

So with a humbled heart, we are asking for help. Prayers and reaching out are needed, welcomed, and always appreciated. Helping offset costs associated with this diagnosis, in any manner, would be monumental!! My kids and I are thankful for any and all of the support we will receive. Our goal is to help offset 2022’s Out of Pocket costs, as we know this fight will continue, even past this year.
