My name is Cory and I have been a middle school Math Teacher for 13 years. I have been deaf since birth but can speak well with the use of hearing aids and read lips. I have been in speech therapy for many years. The devices are extremely expensive and I am asking for help in order to begin to rebuild my speaking voice after COVID and the mask made my hearing decline tremendously with aids requiring special devices to hear my self talk. It has taken many devices to fix this and speak again well and I am thankful for those that have supported me so far. Insurance companies calls hearing devices “consmetic”. They must be replaced every 2-3 years.
I am also partnering with Sertoma Hearing in Tampa, FL to help launch my own non-profit with the shared mission to help children that need devices to learn to speak. To have a voice in this world- especially as a child is beyond important and empowering.
Even if you can donate, a share would be appreciated. Seeing all of the support makes me have faith that this is how I can make a change.
My goal is not only to tell my story, but my mission with your help is to fight the Florida State Legislature and demand they overturn their decision two years ago to not require insurance companies to cover hearing aids-especially for kids.
