Corri Luna's Fight Against Lupus

Corri Luna was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) when she was a freshman in high school in 2014.  Lupus is a chronic and complex autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack healthy tissue.  It can affect the joints, skin, brain, lungs, kidneys, and blood vessels, causing widespread inflammation and tissue damage in the affected organs.

On November 24, 2018, Corri suffered 2 seizures and was taken by ambulance to Seton Main hospital in Austin, Texas but was soon transferred to the ICU in Dell Seton Hospital, where a more specialized team of doctors could care for her.  It was quickly determined that the Lupus had attacked her kidneys. She was in stage 4 renal failure, causing her blood pressure to become dangerously high, causing Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES)…which caused the seizures. She then became septic after contracting a staph infection in her blood and had to have 11 blood transfusions over the course of 5 weeks. She also suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage in her brain that left her with temporary paralysis in her right eye and eyelid.

After 28 days Corri was able to come home for Christmas but was back in the hospital for New Year’s Eve because her left eye started to malfunction and there was fear of another hemorrhage. She soon went back home a couple of days later. On January 6th, 2019, Corri experience 2 more Grand Mal seizures caused by the high blood pressure.  She remained in Dell Seton ICU for another month while her team of doctors worked to find a control for her blood pressure. She also began to receive chemotherapy in the hopes of restoring her kidney function. She was released on January 26th and was home for 48 hrs, but then she was once again rushed to the ER for high blood pressure and her 5th set of seizures. After nearly another month in the ICU, Corri came home on February 23 and remains there under the loving care of her parents.

Now – let me tell you about Corri. If you know her, you love her, and you don’t need my words to convince you of how special she is. If you don’t know Corri and her story connects with you in some way I can tell you this – she is mighty and she is fierce. She is a 20 year old young lady who is driven, smart, kind, beautiful, loving, funny and full of God’s grace. She has rarely complained about the turn her life took back in November and has met her battle with courage, strength and plenty of humor.

The medical bills are mounting, and unfortunately are going to weigh down Corri’s journey into young adulthood. We have set up this fund for her in the hopes that we can help with those costs so that when she’s fully healed (and she WILL BE) she can go back to a normal life without that burden..this girl’s going back to college, folks! She’s got things to do in this world, and I know we can help her.

Every little bit helps, even if you’ve only got $1 to spare – it all adds up. If you can’t donate, prayers are powerful and have been felt by her and her family from all of you. Send one up for Corri for continued healing.
