Cork to Dublin cycle in aid of Cork ARC Cancer Support House
My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. Thankfully, she is now is now in the clear and recovering well.
Hearing the news that a parent has cancer is terrifying. I found great comfort in reaching out to friends and speaking about my fears. Through these conversations, I found out that a few of my friend's mothers have also had breast cancer in some form. According to Breast Cancer Ireland, 1 in 7 women will have a breast cancer diagnosis in their lives, a statistic I hadn't known before. It's been a bit of a wake up call for me to know that so many people, young and old, might have this diagnosis at some stage.
My friends and I spoke about surgery recovery times, outcomes from chemotherapy, how our mothers were getting on, the bravery they showed whilst being treated.
I'd like to show some support to my mother, my friends' mothers, and to any other people affected by breast cancer. My mother, who lives in New Zealand, received great help from her local cancer society. I grew up in Cork and want to support a charity here in Ireland that provides hands on support to cancer patients.
I shall be cycling 300km from Cork to Dublin on Saturday August 3rd 2024 in aid of Cork ARC Cancer Support House.
ARC House is a lifeline and a support to cancer patients and their families and carers during what can be their most difficult and challenging time.
Funds raised help ARC House to continue to provide their vital range of evidence-based services to patients, their families and carers; ranging from core services including the provision of information from oncology nurses, psychological support from psychotherapists, and survivorship programs, such as Cork ARC's Breast cancer support service.
I will be sharing updates on the day on my Instagram if you'd like to follow along! (@lorcanfidge)
Thank you!
