This is Corey West and his mother Jennifer Christian.
We are asking you to help us raise money for Corey to attend Skyuka Hall, a school that is a sanctuary for children like Corey. Every student who goes to Skyuka has unique challenges and the staff is trained to create an individualized learning experience for each of these children. Here is a link to their website. Corey has not had an easy life. His biological mother left him when he was only an infant and Jennifer has raised him ever since then. He cried non-stop for six months and then was sick for the next two years. And then things smoothed out, until now.
When Corey started fifth grade, Jennifer noticed that he seemed to be having some difficulty speaking, walking, running, riding his bicycle and remembering things; things that he had done with ease in the past. That is when she started searching for an answer. And it has taken four years and many different doctors and finally just a mother's instinct and drive to get the correct answer!
That answer is devastating. Corey has Juvenile Huntington's Disease (JHD). There is no cure. Among other heartbreaking symptoms, one common sign of JHD is a rapid decline in school performance.
Because of this disease, Corey doesn't speak or move like the other children at school. He is bullied, ignored, teased and excluded every day at the public school. It is unending and horrible for him. His teachers are not able to adapt a public school classroom to meet his unique learning requirements and because they don't understand what Corey's needs are, they get frustrated easily and the phone calls and texts from teachers to Jennifer rarely stop.
Corey has been granted a scholarship to attend Skyuka Hall which is wonderful and generous, but it will not cover the entire tuition. That is why we need your help!
We are raising money to be sure Corey gets the best education he can in the best environment available.
Your donations will be used to pay for Corey to go to Skyuka Hall this fall. Every donation can help us reach this goal.
