Cord Banking for Krissy
Spende geschützt
One of my best friends is currently 34 weeks pregnant with her first child. It should be the happiest time of her life but instead, she is worrying about her and her son's future. Throughout her pregnancy, she has had high volumes of protein in her urine but her blood pressure has been low so preeclampsia was ruled out. It was still really high at her appointment on August 10th so she was referred to a Nephrologist that same day, thinking maybe it was something with the kidneys. The Nephrologist ordered blood tests. All week, the results were coming back negative & normal, which is good. Then, that following Sunday, August 16th, she called to let Krissy know one test came back abnormal. This test was testing the bone marrow production of protein. Basically, her bone marrow was producing abnormal amounts of protein. She was then referred to an Oncologist. Her appointment with the Oncologist was that following Wednesday, August 19th. When he came in, both Krissy and Eric knew it wasn't good. He gave Krissy a hug, sat down, asked how they were and then said " well, it's not good. It's malignant. It's Multiple Myeloma." After explaining how they would do treatment while pregnant & after, he sent Krissy to the lab for blood work & while in office they did a bone marrow biopsy. Since then, Krissy has been on steroids and antibiotics to help keep the cancer at bay.
I am trying to raise money to allow Krissy to bank the cord blood from Brandon when he is born. It is not certain at what point in Krissy's treatment this will occur. The cord blood would be used for stem cell transplant mixed with blood from Krissy that has been "cleaned" and put back into her body. There is not enough cord blood for an adult, so that is why they would use it with her "cleaned" blood for the transplant.
The cost of cord banking is $1200 for 1 child + $175/year storage fee for a total of $1375 for 1 year. If paid in full for 20 years at the time of banking, this cost would be greatly reduced, only $3965 for 20 years of storage. All money raised will go directly to the cost of cord banking. Any additional funds raised will be used for Krissy's continued medical costs.
Multiple myeloma facts:
Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Plasma cells help you fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs.
Multiple myeloma causes cancer cells to accumulate in the bone marrow, where they crowd out healthy blood cells. Rather than produce helpful antibodies, the cancer cells produce abnormal proteins that can cause kidney problems.
