Coral's DC Environmental Summit & Training

I am thrilled and honored to have been nominated to represent Rhode Island in the 2020 Washington DC Youth Summit on the Environment. Only 250 students per year have this rare opportunity and I am grateful for any assistance I can get to make this experience possible.
I have a strong passion for environmental issues and have spent much of my youth as both an outdoor enthusiast and activist. My overall goal is to become a Marine Biologist as well as an Environmental Lawyer to fight to save our oceans. I believe this summit can help me get closer to my goals by developing my leadership and advocacy skills.
I attended second through eighth grade at John Muir, an environmental science magnet school in Ashland, Oregon. There, I learned both in the classroom and in the field during weekly outdoor expeditions that included volunteering with local environmental groups, participated in research studies, and performed conservation work. This, along with my early experience scuba diving, was the beginning of my passion for environmental science and specifically marine protection.
I have had the privilege of traveling to many locations from Palau, Australia, Tahiti, and French Polynesia. I have witnessed first-hand the devastating effects of climate change as well as observe the successful programs for conservation such as those in Palau that reversed many of the effects of both overfishing and climate change. I am prepared to help create and participate in such programs and believe my strong math and science background equips me for the Environmental Summit college-level work.
Our current climate crisis demands we move quickly and decisively to protect our planet and I am hopeful this summit will prepare me for that challenge.
The tuition for this six-day summit covers intense training courses, hands-on experience working with wildlife, and lectures held by leading conservationists. At the end of the summit, I will have the opportunity to meet with Congress and speak to the current issues facing our planet.
Thank you for your consideration. I appreciate any support you can provide.
