Hi! I’ve been staying in Puerto Rico for my research and recently came into a unique situation.

One day we peeked outside at our AirBnb and saw a dog in the yard. We were cautious about this dog because some of the strays and feral dogs here can be aggressive. This dog was far from aggressive, however. Instead, she was super skinny, scared, and just pretty sad all around. We thought she would move on eventually…

…but she didn’t. She’s stayed on the porch of our AirBnb ever since. My amateur sleuthing and deductive powers have led me to conclude that she’s likely spent most of her life tied up and not treated too well. I think there’s a good chance she was abandoned and that’s how she ended up on our dead-end road in rural Puerto Rico.

We’ve been calling her Coquí - like the beloved frogs that sing every night on the island. She’s incredibly sweet, well-mannered, and loving, despite her sad start to life. Based on her teeth, build, and behavior, I think she’s probably not even a year old yet. This girl deserves a loving, happy life and she’s so ready to be the perfect companion.

Coquí’s predicament is one of location. Puerto Rico has over 200,000 stray/feral dogs and as a result, rescues are above and beyond capacity. With all these dogs running around, everyone who wants a dog already has one and probably an extra few that trying to get rid of.

Coquí’s best chance at the life she deserves is to come to the States where she can find her forever family. I have no doubt that everyone who meets her will fall in love with her; it’s impossible not to.

The amount I’ve chosen for this campaign is based off of an estimate I got from a pet transport service that will get her checked by a vet and certified for travel, provides the shipping kennel, and handles all of the organization. They’ll be able to ship her from San Juan to Chicago.
