Help Save Copper’s Smile & Give Him More Happy Years
Our rescue pup Copper who became our kids’ best friend now faces a rare autoimmune disease and a fast-growing gum tumor. We’ve already spent thousands on his care, but he needs surgery and ongoing treatment to keep living the full, joyful life he deserves. Every donation helps us fight for Copper’s future.
When we first adopted Copper, we called him our “discount pup.” He was only $5 at the San Antonio shelter because he had landed on the euthanasia list , not for anything he did, but simply because the shelter was overcrowded. At just three months old, this sweet little super mutt stole our hearts.
Since then, Copper has given us more than we could have ever imagined. He inspired us to adopt two more rescue pups, creating the perfect puppy pack. He’s made us laugh through his mischievous moments (like his fondness for eating things he shouldn’t …thanks to the Lab in him). But most importantly, Copper has been the most loyal companion to our growing family.
When our son Emerson was born in 2021, Copper never left his side. If you ask Emerson who his best friend is, without hesitation he’ll tell you “Copper.” When our daughter was born in 2024, Copper’s heart grew even bigger, instantly becoming her guardian and bestie too. To our children, Copper is more than a pet, he is family, a constant source of comfort, love, and joy.
This May, our world turned upside down. Copper began shedding his toenails and developed painful paw infections. After multiple emergency vet visits, biopsies, and thousands of dollars in care, he was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called Lupoid Onychodystrophy. This means he will need lifelong immunosuppressants, regular checkups, and testing to keep him comfortable.
As if that wasn’t enough, during one of his exams, the vet discovered a small mass on his gums. At first, we monitored it while focusing on his paw condition but at his most recent visit, the mass had tripled in size. The mass now needs to be surgically removed and biopsied by a specialist. Because this isn’t yet classified as life-threatening, we don’t qualify for most financial aid programs unless cancer is confirmed.
Copper’s road ahead is long, but we are holding onto hope that this tumor is benign. What we know for certain is that Copper deserves the chance to keep being the best friend, protector, and goofy pup our family loves so much.
We are humbly asking for help to cover the cost of his upcoming surgery, biopsy, and ongoing care. Every dollar makes a difference in giving Copper the chance to live a full, happy life by the sides of the little humans who adore him. If you aren’t able to donate, even sharing his story means the world to us.
From the bottom of our hearts thank you for helping us fight for Copper.
❤️ The Martinez Family
