Hi Everyone,
It's been a whirlwind of a year so far, as most of you may already know. We welcomed our first (human) child, our son Miles, into the world in mid-February - which has been an absolute blessing. Unfortunately, as it always does, life had already been throwing us curve balls going into the week of Miles' delivery when our little beagle-dachsund mix, Milo, had to be admitted to the ER vet for an unknown mass and major surgery to remove it, just four days prior to Miles (the human) being born.
Shortly after, our other dog, Copper, began to show abnormal signs in his own personality when he started eating less and becoming very lethargic. We took him to our vet and after discussing, came to the conclusion that he had a cracked tooth and would need a sedated dental surgery to remove it in a few weeks. Routine bloodwork showed some slight abnormalities internally, but nothing to worry about at the time. A week later, he continued to refuse food and/or be very picky about what he was given, so we brought him back to the vet, who re-ran his bloodwork and found a bacterial infection that led us to having him put on anti-biotics. A week after that (this past Thursday), he stopped eating altogether and was barely drinking water - which led to, you guessed it - another visit to the vet. They ran some more tests and found that he was headed towards congenital liver failure (jaundice, low grade fever, and concerning counts related to his bloodwork). He was admitted to the local veterinary ER/ICU on Friday afternoon and has been there since.
The past 24 hours have been uncertain, soul crushing, and scary as the doctors told us that if his counts in his bloodwork were not up by today (my birthday) we would have to come to terms with a plan for end of life. Luckily, miraculously, we just spoke with the doctors and his counts have gone down. They are going to have to keep him for another 48 hours, with a feeding tube, and a number of medications to use this momentum to try and get him over the hump and continuing towards recovery.
Unfortunately, given everything we have had to deal with between our other dog, our son being born, and the ever mounting hospital and vet bills; Kelsey and I have been digging into whatever we can to keep things at bay and we are in dire need of help. If there was ever a birthday miracle, this is it, and we are reaching out to you all in the hopes that our friends and family can (as they always have) rally around us and support us as we try to help our boy fight.
If you are able, any little bit helps! We love you all, we are so thankful for each and every one of you and we hope that this signals the end of these trials for us and for our fur babies so that we can just focus on being a family again.
Love,
Alex, Kelsey, Miles, Milo, Copper, Kevin, and Arthur
