My name is Rhonda and my fundraiser is for my health clinic
When people think about losing a loved one to a disease, they may think of a complex and aggressive illness like cancer; or they may think of diseases uninsured people get like diabetes or heart disease. But they don’t usually think that they can lose a loved one who has health insurance and goes to the doctor every 3-6 months. At least, that’s what I thought until I lost my mother.
She worked her whole life to support me and my sisters, and we never knew she had high blood pressure. She thought she had it under control. After all, she went to the doctor for her annual appointments and he had prescribed her a blood pressure medication. Then one day, she went into kidney failure and my whole world fell apart right in front of my eyes. It was then that we came to learn of her little secret: she had been taking half of her blood pressure pill for years. It was to save money because she couldn’t afford the medication even with her insurance. You may be thinking why she didn’t just tell her doctor to prescribe a cheaper medication. I wish she was her for us to ask her but if I had to guess maybe she was embarrassed, maybe she didn’t feel comfortable asking her doctor such a thing or maybe should just wasn’t aware that there were other medications that he could have prescribed.
I wish she had known better, done things differently, or just told someone. There were so many options our family could have helped her explore; other sacrifices could have been made. I realize that I can’t change the past, that I can only change the present. That’s why for over 20 years, my dream has been to start up a health clinic in Charlotte for those individuals that need help filling the gaps in their healthcare. I want to make good health accessible to everyone in our community by providing medical care and medication for acute and chronic conditions. I want to be that provider that you feel comfortable talking to, asking questions, and receiving advice. I want to be a great community resources in the same city where the healthcare system failed my mother (Sylvia Cooper). I’m asking you to assist me in opening Cooper Health Clinic. I’m in need of equipment and medical supplies for my office. My doors are almost open, but I have a few bills that must be paid. If I have ever helped you in the past with any medical attention or advice now is the time that you can show me your thanks. Monetary donations are needed for medical supplies, but I am also in need of office furniture for my waiting room and reception area (used items will be accepted) If I can get everything finalized, my grand opening will be Jan 2023 and I’m accepting Medicaid, Medicare, and most commercial insurances. I thank you in advance for making my dream become a reality.
