Cooper's Fight Against Chordoma
Donation protected
Cooper Burrell is currently a 15 year old sophomore at Clover High School in Clover, SC. He is active in AF ROTC 2 and maintains a high average in his classes all while dealing with this life-changing condition. Here is his story:
Cooper started having neck pain in late July. He was seen by the chiropractor twice and his Primary Care Physician once. He had a cervical spine x-ray that was negative so he was placed on muscle relaxers and NSAIDS. His neck pain didn't improve so his PCP referred him to a neurologist, who ordered an MRI and physical therapy. An MRI of his brain was performed on the evening of October 27, 2020. The next morning, the neurologist called at 8:45 and reported that they saw something on the MRI of the brain and wanted to get an MRI of his neck. His family took him to Presbyterian Hospital for the MRI of the neck at 2:00pm on October 28, 2020. After that MRI, Cooper was sent to the children's emergency room and then admitted. On October 30, 2020, he had a biopsy where they went in through his mouth to the back of his throat. On November 11, 2020, he had a port surgically implanted into his chest and started chemotherapy. Cooper has weekly visits to the St. Jude Clinic in Charlotte, NC. He gets admitted to Hemby Children's Hospital every 21 days for chemotherapy. The chemo admission lasts 4 to 5 days. The family is still waiting to find out when he starts radiation. He gets MRIs about every 3 weeks along with CT Scans and Pet Scans periodically.
Cooper has a SMARCB1 deficient poorly differentiated chordoma that behaves more like a sarcoma. It is located in the cervical spine at C1, C2, and C3.
