From the same unit, the six other soldiers are SPC Joshua Ross Campbell of Bennett, CO; SGT Devin James Daniels of Kuna, Idaho; SGT Colby Lee Richmond of Providence, NC: PFC Alberto Lustre Obod of Orlando, FL; SSG Robert Anthony Massarelli of Hamilton, OH; and SGT Michael Joseph Strachota of White Hall, Arkansas.
When the United States began to withdraw from Afghanistan in 2014, the memorial was dismantled and shipped to Fort Hood, Texas. Through the tireless efforts of Shawn Muhr's father, the U.S. Army donated the memorial to Dave Muhr and the City of Coon Rapids. It is now on location in Coon Rapids where it will be relocated into the new Veterans Memorial Park.
At this point, there is no other memorial that we know of created by the US Government and erected in Afghanistan that will now be displayed in the United States -- let alone a small rural community in west central Iowa.
To be clear, this Veterans Memorial Park will also honor all Coon Rapids soldiers killed in action in all conflicts beginning with WW1.
A committee representing the Coon Rapids city council, the American Legion Post #357 and community members has been created to design, promote and build this new memorial park.
