I am writing this for all to read because my family could use some help. I am solely writing our story for our son, Sean. He is amazing and we are truly blessed to have him in our lives. However, since his birth, with whom he shared with his brother Matthew, may he rest in peace, it has been a rough road for us, even rougher for Sean.
My husband and I met in December of 1991. He is a career firefighter and instructor at the Fire Academy. We married on April 29, 1995 and had our first son, Erik, the following year. He was two months early. Obviously, we were distraught over what to expect. With lots of prayers, and God watching over him, he has become an amazing young man who has followed in his father’s footsteps. After Erik arrived, I became pregnant three years later with twin boys. We were ecstatic, especially my husband. Don’t get me wrong, so was I but I guess being a man, it’s the ultimate dream to have boys. Our happiness soon turned to become a very heavy heart. Our boys were born 3 months too early. Matthew James was born first and Sean Michael was born next. Our little Matthew survived two days. He quietly passed in our arms. It’s an unexplainable feeling to have given life and then to be there in death. It was one of the most beautiful moments in our lives and the most devastating. He was Heaven’s newest angel. Sean on the other had was a fighter, still to this day. He stayed in the hospital for three months. The months following were extremely difficult. But with our faith we survived.
After a few months, I went back to work. I had a wonderful mother who watched Sean. Erik was in school. During this time, we learned that Sean was diagnosed with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. The doctors had no idea what we were to expect as he got older. I knew in my heart that Sean was going to need us desperately. The time came where my husband and I decided that I had to leave work. Sean was getting to be much for my mom to take care of. She loved him with all her heart, but she was elderly and we had to think of her health. Since Sean was nonverbal, we did not feel comfortable trying to find someone or some other facility to take care of him. We were fearful to leave him with strangers. So, I left work.
I loved being home but I will not sugar coat it. It was very difficult. I kept asking God why. I even got mad at Him sometimes. But I always knew that Sean was a gift. He always was very happy no matter what. Here’s a kid with severe disabilities smiling and I’m upset. I shouldn’t be. Sean had a purpose, we just knew it. Over the years things got difficult and expensive. Lots of hospitalizations, surgeries, illnesses, therapies, medications, diapers, Ensure, and equipment, some of which were not covered by insurance (even more difficult today) as I am sure all of you are aware. The list goes on and on.
My husband is awesome. He works three jobs just to make ends meet. He works hard. And this is where my plea for assistance comes in. We need help to purchase an adaptive wheelchair van for Sean. It’s so very expensive and we simply do not have the money. It would be so wonderful to take Sean out. His whole world at this time revolves around school and home. We do take walks but we would love to take him places. So, this is our story. Of course, there is so much more……….
I thank all who read our story. Even if you do not donate, I hope you and your family the best. Our Sons are amazing and we are truly blessed with what we already have. There are so many others in the world with much less. We would just love to open a whole new world for Sean.
Thank you so much for your time
Sincerely,
The Anderson Family
