Synopsis

An aspiring rugby player, struggles to coincide life with his mental health struggles and insecurities, having his aggression build through rugby, he is challenged through his approach to regress.

Ashley Foster - Writer/Director

Hello, I'm Ashley Foster, the director and writer of Controlled Aggression. I wanted to create this film to help those with mental health and insecurities within a high octane sport like rugby, to open up and share their thoughts and struggles, creating an open environment to explore the male mental health issues we face in society. Being able to develop my own personal thoughts and experiences into a sport that I love to watch and play, also being able to share that with others is what really drove me to create this idea.

Milo Abbiss - Cinematographer

I am the cinematographer on this short film and I am very excited to get this project off the ground and into your peripherals. I like films which explore themes of realism through strong relatable characters, and how the visual language of cinematography can elicit these internal emotions. For Controlled Aggression I have taken inspiration from DP Suzie Lavell’s work in the BBC mini series Normal People, and how Suzie has established ‘the Simplicity of Pure Storytelling’. Due to the shortness of the film, I want to focus on simplicity, establishing mood and tone in the first few frames. From then, I want to closely follow and pull out Luke’s emotions through a variation of close ups, using a shallow depth of field to separate Luke from the world of toxic masculinity. Getting inside Luke’s head will allow me to solely focus on character drive and the resolution he comes to at the end of the film.

Weng Anderson - Production Designer

Hi! I’m Weng (Wendell) and I’ll be the lead Production Designer for ‘Controlled Aggression.’ Ashley’s story really hooked me on the grounded and sentimental nature of the subject, which I know a lot of people can relate with.

As an aspiring Production Designer for the film industry, I’m inspired by fantasy, sci-fi and surrealistic media as it allows me to explore concepts, creatively express myself, as well as having a knack for minute detail. I’ll enhance this project by focusing on the detail of our characters’ costume designs, set dressing (items they carry) and the SFX makeup.

Your donations will help go towards these in order to enhance this touching story. I’m thrilled to be part of this and am determined to create a visually appealing piece of filmmaking.

Lewis Watson - Sound Designer

Hi I’m Lewis and I’m the lead Sound Designer for Controlled Aggression. Some of my inspirations and favourite films include Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Oldboy. I was interested to work on this film due to its focus on mental health in a sport where I have personally rarely seen it discussed.

Thank you for reading! All funds will be greatly appreciated for our final year film.
