California colleagues and friends request contributions to help Charity's family bear the cost of the services.
Our colleague and friend Charity King passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Charity was a beloved member of the representative payee unit at Disability Rights California and had been one of the Compliance Reviewers since October 2019 based in the Santa Ana office. Charity grew up in Tennessee with fifteen siblings as the thirteenth child. Although she moved to California in 1986, she considered Tennessee her home and donned the color orange for the University of Tennessee every chance she had.
Charity was a zealous advocate for foster youth and individuals living with mental health disability. She was an active member of NAMI Long Beach. In her work as a Compliance Reviewer Charity brought care and empathy to her advocacy. She was particularly compassionate and thorough when she spoke with Social Security beneficiaries to make sure their money was appropriately managed and they knew all the resources available for their needs.
Charity was generous with her time. She reached out to colleagues that faced challenges and spent time listening to them. Charity was a comfort wall for staff within and outside of the rep payee team. She embodied the spirit of DRC with her kindness and resiliency. Even during tough times, Charity brought sunshine and joy to those she interacted with.
We miss you Charity! May you rest in peace.
