Just $350 away from our final goal! Miracles do happen! Even when they're missing most of their butt and covered in beautiful feathers.
Miracle was first found limping around a yard in St. Cloud, MN. After a three-hour round trip to pick her up, one of our volunteers started critical care immediately. We spent hours on the phone with experienced rescuers from across the country, doing everything we could to keep her stable until her vet appointment on Friday, June 12. With one bad leg, we all assumed something had to be broken. But somehow, her legs and hips were perfect. Not a single break.
What we found instead was much worse. Miracle had been sitting and waiting for help for so long that a large amount of dried fecal matter had built up around her injuries. After several baths and a lot of careful cleaning, the real problem finally revealed itself: a section of tissue roughly 1" x 1" was completely missing from her back end around her vent.
Despite all of this, she spent those first days hanging out on soft bedding, preening and staring everyone down like they personally took the last French fry. She was syringe-fed fluids and nutrients, got plenty of rest, and received exactly the care she needed.
We went into this hoping her wounds might heal on their own. After two weeks, she'd made EXCELLENT progress—that 1" x 1" wound was healing beautifully. Unfortunately, one wound didn't heal as well. The wound on her left hock started showing early signs of sepsis, and for a while, amputation looked like the only path to a long, happy life for her. Pigeons are resilient, and this one is especially so.
Good news: no amputation needed
After 4 vet visits and consults with top pigeon rehabbers from across the country, we learned Miracle does not need an amputation after all. Her butt has healed completely, and new feathers are already coming in back there. The wound on her leg is healing too, though it remains infected, and after another consult, we adjusted her wound care and meds, and we're confident she'll pull through just fine.

Here's the catch….Miracle's too fragile to be released back into the city where she was found.

Good news came from an unexpected direction, Moose's Flock, a sanctuary in San Diego County, CA, has offered her a permanent home as a very loved, indoor bird.

She'll stay in Minneapolis with her foster mom until she's strong enough for the trip. (Did you know you can ship pigeons? Funny thing, flying a bird across the country.)

Where we're at-
We're just $350 shy of covering Miracle's vet bills and her flight to California.

Huge thanks to the people who made this rescue possible:
Northstar Pigeon Network for coordinating Miracle's rescue
Cascadia Pigeon Rescue for lifesaving triage via video calls
Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue and Derby City Pigeon Rescue for their expertise in her continued care
Palomacy Pigeon Rescue for including Miracle's tip jar in their annual gala
Moose's Flock for taking Miracle under their wings when she’s ready
And to YOU, pigeon people are the best people of all!
If all goes well, Miracle could be on her way to California within a month. We'll keep sending updates to donors right up until she's settled into her new home.
