Hello, my name is Jamie Murray and I am the partner of Jason Hinkle. First, I want to thank you for taking the time to read our story. Jason and I have achieved so much together in our 9 years as a couple. We have a loving dog named Daisy and in 2022 of Fall we even purchased our first home together. We were ready to start a new chapter in our lives and start a family. Unfortunately, in October 2023, during our first anniversary of home ownership, Jason was diagnosed with cancer of the sinuses after a 5-day hospital visit where the biopsied site hemorrhaged leading to a medical emergency.
Since then, the cancer has been identified in lab results as most likely ewing sarcoma which is a very rare and aggressive cancer typically located in the long bones like arms or legs. But in Jason’s case, it is in a rare location behind the left eye and filling up the sinuses on the left side. Ewing sarcoma is categorized not like other cancers but whether it's local or metastatic. Incidentally, it was discovered that there were lesions present on the left side of his brain. It was not certain that this growth was metastatic, potential multiple sclerosis, or inflammation but currently, after many CT, PET, and MRI scans, Jason’s cancer is still localized to the sinuses, and those brain lesions have reduced in size before treatment was started.
Jason is currently undergoing treatment at MD Anderson at Cooper University Hospital. It is one of the best places for treatment for this specific cancer and is located nearby to us. The treatment plan is to undergo 17 cycles of chemotherapy with the following goals:
- Shrink the tumor and kill any cancer cells in the body
- Remove the primary tumor with surgery and radiation. If the chemotherapy has shrunken it beyond surgery then only radiation.
- Treat any remaining cancer in the body to reduce the risk of it returning. This includes many follow-up visits for lab work and scans.
Jason is currently on his 3rd cycle of chemotherapy after starting on November 9th, 2023, and is projected to be starting his 4th cycle on January 22nd, 2024, if his health allows. Throughout this therapy, he will take several scans to monitor the growth of the tumor and I promise to provide updates for these scans.
I am looking to raise funds to help cover the cost of treatment for cancer that his insurance will not be covering. The funds will be used to cover the cost of the chemotherapy drugs which are around $2,000 a cycle. His insurance covers the cost of medical treatment after $6,000 has been spent by us out of pocket. With the additional funds from a flexible spending account, we can be reimbursed $2,500 of the $6,000. That leaves us with $3,500 not covered by insurance for 2024 and 2025.
I am humbly reaching out to you and others in the hope of raising a total of $7,000 to help alleviate the stress of cancer treatment among having mortgage and student loans to pay.
Any contribution, no matter how small, would be deeply appreciated.
