Contractor stole $180,000 from Douglas Co family

Hello… It is Mike and Brenda Wagner. Some of you may have heard our story from the news, or from people you know. We recently were able to have our story told on Denver’s channel 7 news with weekend anchor/consumer investigative news reporter, Jaclyn Allen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKy7FHxGd7o

We are the family that paid $180,000 to a contractor to complete an addition to our home and instead of getting a completed addition, the contractor took our money and disappeared.

We were left with a partially built addition that is no where close to being done and now we have no funds left to use. This man took everything we had saved. Literally, our life savings gone, and there is no getting it back. We are working with Douglas County law enforcement and hope an arrest will soon follow. We have spoken to an attorney twice and have been told we have a great and solid case, however, we do not have the funds to retain him this time for a civil case. If there is even a slim chance of holding him financially responsible, we have been told our best chance is through civil action.

Asking for help for ourselves has never been a strength of ours. Mike and I have always been the couple who help others. I have devoted my life to social work. Over 25 years of giving in every way I could to the children and families across Colorado. It pained me to have to walk away from my career when my father passed away unexpectedly and yet it also gave me pride to become a full time caregiver to my mother and to be able to care for her as she has always cared for me. Mike has always given his time, energy and knowledge to help others without even thinking about it. It is just who he is as a human. We have never been the ones to ask for help. This journey has not been easy for us.

Our story being aired on the news recently has opened us up to the good that is in our community. It has brought people into our lives who want to help us and feel for us. People who have told us, we too are in fact deserving of being helped. This made us pause.

We have professionals coming forward, including, Shane Lamberty, with Infinity Builders LLC, who has agreed to be our contractor and finish our project, pro bono. He has quickly become a hero and we are speechless and grateful for his kindness. We understand that some may be able to offer services for free or donate materials, there are others that will be able to offer discounts.

Mike and I still need a budget to work with to get our project done. So, we are asking for help to meet 2 goals! First, so we can pursue a civil case. Please help us bring this contractor to justice. Secondly, so we can finally, after almost 2 long years, complete our addition.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated! please don't hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or comments!

Thank you!
