Continuing the fight for William

Donativo protegido
On the 14th December 2017 my son, William Chung age 17 was diagnosed with B-Cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This is a life threatening form of pediatric cancer. Those words rocked our world as we thought it was just a virus and he was getting better. We were visiting Florida for the week and had plans to go shopping for Christmas gifts and watch Star Wars. Instead that weekend was spent in the inpatient pediatric oncology unit at the hospital, researching B-Cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, treatment, side effects, and deciding with our doctors when to start treatment.

I took comfort in the bible verse which reads “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” and on the 22nd of December William started chemotherapy and the first step in the fight for his life. I had health insurance for him which I thought would at least be able to cover the first year of treatment which was more intense. At the end of July 2018, William was hospitalized for fever as a result of an infection and that was when I became aware that his insurance was limited. The cost of treatment of this life-threatening illness had gobbled up his life time maximum coverage of US $1 million. This meant that the cost of nearly three weeks in the hospital and future medical bills are now on me to pay.

I am William’s only living parent as his father died in 2013, but the prayers and support from family, friends and strangers have given me the strength to walk this journey with my son. Prior to being told that I had no insurance I was struggling with the cost of paying the 20% deductible, purchasing his medication, living expenses in Florida, traveling back and forth to work as I try my utmost to maintain my job. We are originally from Jamaica but reside the Turks and Caicos Islands and I have been able to work remotely and return home as often as possible in order to keep my job. Now with this new revelation, no insurance, the mountain has become steeper and the road to his recovery has become harder to travel.

William needs your financial assistance to ensure that he continues to receive the treatment that is required to win this fight against cancer. William is more than 8 months into the 3 year treatment protocol for this life-threatening illness. This protocol includes frequent chemotherapy and hospitalization. This has been a long, humbling, heart wrenching experience for me. The lower his blood counts become the more anxious I feel. I hear someone cough and I jump into protective mode; where is he? Does he have his mask on? For William, his life was turned inside out: the way the chemo makes him feel, causes a foggy brain. His 18th birthday was spent in the hospital fighting an infection. During June 2018 when his classmates and friends were graduating grade 12 he laid in a hospital bed receiving chemo.

We are in desperate need of any help you can give to assist with paying the amounts currently outstanding to the hospital and to ensure that his scheduled chemo treatment is not interrupted. I can’t even imagine what would happen if we had to stop treatment at this time. Please help to save my child’s life by contributing to this life saving fundraising event and forwarding this plea for help to your acquaintances, friends and family.

Thank you and God Bless

PS.  for transparency my childhood friend Margaret Smith is also assisting with this campaign
