Continue to Support Abe’s Road to Recovery
Donation protected
Some of Abe’s good friends from UCLA took the time to put together this update for everyone. Here is the link to the original GoFundMe as well: Support Abe’s Road to Recovery
It is with great appreciation of the continued support we have received in Abe’s journey to recovery that we write to you now. The donations towards Abe’s cause have been paramount. However, the medical expenses have been innumerable.
Abe has made substantial progress since January 14th, overcoming every diagnosis and obstacle that comes his way. When doctors were unsure if the damage to Abe’s medulla would prevent him from ever being able to breathe on his own, he overcame and has been breathing without ventilator assistance since March 24th. Abe’s level of consciousness is improving at the same rate. His eyes track towards movement and sound as well, making strong eye contact with people speaking to him. He has established a balanced sleep-wake cycle, sleeping well through the night and awake for most the day. In recent news, Abe has started smiling, laughing, and even mouthing words like “I love you, too.” He continues to make strides forwards on many more facets of healing through speech, occupational, and physical therapy. Abe’s presence when friends and family visit provides hope and excitement to everyone alongside his journey to recovery.
While the improvements have been unbelievable, they haven’t come without their setbacks. On April 1st, Abe underwent surgery to place a shunt in the fourth ventricle of his brain to help drain fluid that was accumulating around his brain. In addition to the brain swelling, Abe has battled with persistent pneumonia and infection during his recovery. Thanks to Liz and Scott, Abe’s tireless advocates, the surgeries have gone well and Abe continues to overcome all the challenges that come his way.
Abe’s journey to recovery is still a long road ahead, and it would not be possible without the generous support you have given already. That being said, there are still many burdensome medical expenses left along the way and your donations make a world of difference. As Abe’s friends, we hope that we can eliminate cost as a consideration when Abe’s family has to make decisions about his treatment. If you are able to donate more to Abe’s cause, we are more than appreciative. Thank you for taking the time to read about Abe’s progress and for considering further support. We’re all in this journey together!
