Contigo Immigration Justice - Help Asylum Seekers!

This fundraiser is in support of Contigo – a new, volunteer interfaith coalition fiscally sponsored by Mountain Vista Unitarian Universalist Church (MVUU) in Tucson, AZ. We are hoping to raise $15,000 to support as many asylum seekers as possible this next year. “Contigo” means “with you” in Spanish. As we enter this new year, could you support an asylum seeker?
Contigo’s mission is to “accompany” asylum seekers in Arizona who need help during and after their release from detention. As they await release from incarceration, our team establishes relationships through written correspondence. We then find them sponsors and temporary homes to live in upon release and provide necessary resources as they get settled in the Tucson community.
A highlight of Contigo’s work in 2020: a young couple seeking asylum is released after seven months in detention. A family from MVUU agrees to house them for several months. During that time, the couple, together with the support of Contigo, overcome various bureaucratic hurdles and they are finally granted asylum. At this point in time their future seems bright. They are now searching for jobs, learning English, and are beginning their lives in the United States.
Sadly, this is one couple out of thousands who have been waiting behind bars or now are huddled at the border in Mexico, having legally requested asylum.
