Ebola is back in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The DRC has had nine run-ins with Ebola since 1976, and has proven to be remarkably successful at controlling the virus.
HandUp Congo played an important role in 2014 by responding quickly when its Congolese project partners in Equateur Province alerted us that Ebola was back. We aim to respond quickly this time, too.
Discovered in 1976 and named after Congo's northern Ebola River, Ebola is a virus which is contracted by humans through contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected animals, typically fruit bats, chimpanzees, gorillas and monkeys.

The local Congolese healthcare teams who are known and trusted in the remote villages surrounding the current outbreak in Bikoro and the urban centre of Mbandaka (with more than 1 million people), are important advocates helping World Health Organisation and Ministry of Health responders to trace and monitor suspected cases. They need help to contain the spread - and reassure a worried population.
We don’t pretend to match the ‘big guns’ of the health disaster response organisations like the World Health Organisation, but we know we CAN make a difference in 11 health centres, 20 schools and 25 parishes that Disciples of Christ Community in Congo (CDCC) works with.
HandUp Congo Incorporated (ABN 12 611 460 987) is a small, non-government organisation based in Australia and registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. It was created to make a difference to the health and well-being of local Congolese communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo – a country that ranks at the bottom of the United Nations Human Development Index.
