The heroism of Const. Mike McCurdy prevented a deliberate, hate-motivated attack on the city’s Jewish community from becoming a mass-casualty event.

On the evening of September 20 2026, members of Belleville’s Jewish community gathered at Sons of Jacob Synagogue for Yom Kippur services. Const. Jeff Smith was struck by gunfire and critically injured. He remains in hospital in critical but stable condition.

Approximately 2 minutes and 47 seconds into the exchange of gunfire, Const. Mike McCurdy arrived at the scene. We cannot imagine the stress of Const. Mike McCurdy arriving on scene to an active shooter and his fellow severely injured officer, Const. Smith.

Without hesitation, Const. McCurdy joined the active gunfight, helping to bring the violent attack to an end, saving all the Jewish congregants inside, as well as Const. Smith.

Const. McCurdy fulfilled the most righteous possible deed. In Judaism, we refer to this as Pikuach Nefesh, the preservation of human life. Const. McCurdy's actions were selfless and nothing short of heroic.

In Judaism, saving one life is considered saving an entire world because every human being represents an infinite universe of potential, family, and future generations.

Const. McCurdy did not only save the congregants inside, but saved every child, grandchild, and descendant who will ever stem from them.

This fundraiser is to express our profound gratitude to Const. McCurdy.

We are profoundly thankful that McCurdy did not sustain life threatening physical injuries. However, the emotional toll of this experience is significant, and mental recovery is just as vital as physical healing. Our goal is to ensure he feels the full support and appreciation of our community.
