Hello,
This is Arun & Christina and we are fundraising for one of our dear friends, for almost 20 years. He was a common friend for both of us who was instrumental in bringing us together in marriage.
He was raised in a well-to-do family & had a comfortable lifestyle all through his early years of life & just when he joined university to do his graduation, his father fell ill & passed away. With that, the burden of taking care of his mom & 2 little sisters fell on him, he was forced to take a break from his studies & help the family in the farming business (tea gardens). But fate struck them with bad luck. That very year the prices of tea leaves dropped to merely nothing in India and came as a big blow to all the tea farmers.
There began all the woes and the family couldn’t sustain long with this huge drop in tea prices & fell into debt to make ends meet.
In a few years, his mother who was hale and healthy suddenly succumbed to a very rare pulmonary blood clot and lost her life. The responsibility of the two sisters weighed on our dear friend more heavily. As a resort to help with their education, he was forced to sell the farmlands in bits and pieces and eventually ended up losing all of the property by the time his 2 sisters were married.
After being left with nothing and wading through the toughest of times to help uplift the family, he found himself sinking in debt. Through it all, he managed to pursue a degree via distant-education that helped him to secure a job with a low income and for a while was able to sustain himself. As days went by, he was suppressed by the burden of his debt and pressure from money lenders. He was forced to borrow more to pay off the existing debts and fell into this viscous cycle with no hope of freedom from this crisis that he almost decided to end his life. In the middle of this crisis, coincidentally he met my mom on a bus. This opened doors for him to encounter God and believe he can be redeemed from this situation.
Currently his job just pays him sufficient enough to survive. Each time the money lenders trouble him, he’s forced to pay them the little he has and often goes hungry. He has survived this difficult ordeal for almost a decade now and there seems to be no way out. As his friends,
we’ve encourage him, supported him and done our bit to lend help in small capacities. After reviewing this entire financial situation, it became pretty evident that he cannot realistically pay off all his debts on his own.
With absolutely no solution to this whatsoever, a sudden idea sparked in us to reach out to all the beautiful and kindhearted people God has put in our paths, whom we believe will lend a helping hand in small ways that might allow him to get a brand new lease of life.
When we shared this very idea with him, he hesitated, but was eventually willing to consider receiving the help. In his words, “If a bunch of unknown, good-hearted people come forward to help me get out of the clutches of debt I am in, I would be able to focus my efforts at work and willing to pay back all the people who come forward to support me at this hour of crisis”.
A person overwhelmed with debt is like a person bleeding from an open wound. Our first step here is to help stop the bleeding. Would you consider being one of them?
Warm Regards,
Arun & Christina
