Conserve the Cloud forest

La Laguna is a small Indigenous community located in a unique cloud forest ecosystem in the mountains surrounding San Ramón in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Although the community has a history of resistance to extractive industry in these precious and sacred mountains, since March 2020 new mining camps have been able to exploit the changing political context of Nicaragua as well as the economic poverty of the region, buying large swathes of land and opening up the area to mining.
These actions lead to short term profits that have drastic and potentially irrevocable consequences to the mountain community; human, animal, vegetable, and mineral. Over the past year, land previously used to cultivate crops or as wildlife habitat has been deforested and repurposed for the contaminating and extractive industry, damaging the integrity of the community’s ecosystem and as well as its cultural heritage. During this short period, mining has already caused significant erosion and disruption to the waterways, both surface and subterranean, that sustain the area. Occurring in an incredibly biodiverse region with more than 127 species of fauna with at least 23 of those classified as endangered, mining degrades or destroys the habitat of species on the brink of extinction.
Thankfully, these actions have not been met without resistance. Preceding and alongside this threat of mining, La Laguna has been the home to important projects in the spirit of honorable and harmonious relationships to one another and the land. Alongside independent farmers, biologists, external allies, artisans, dancers, environmentalists, and guides, an organic agricultural and traditional ceremony project called Rancho Sexto Sol forms a small but dedicated circle of guardians of the mountain. Over the past year, this growing circle of guardians has made public denunciations of the dangerous and often illegal activities of the mining encampment. We have conducted biological studies to understand and illuminate the biodiversity of the region; we have continued long-standing work in agro-ecology and traditional ceremony. Though essential, these are ultimately not enough to truly defend the land for perpetuity. For this purpose, we aspire to create a private nature reserve where human communities can live in harmony with the natural world in peace, honor, and dignity.
All money raised in this GoFundMe will be used to purchase and therefore protect the disputed land, with particular focus on areas known to hold high biodiversity value and/or are of particular interest to industry. The listed fundraising goal is to purchase a Manzana (approximately 1.75 acres) of land to protect Tepetl Tzopilotl, a mountain top whose name in Nahuatl honors the vulture. Aunque la comunidad tiene una historia de resistencia a la industria extractiva en estas preciosas y sagradas montañas, desde el Marzo de 2020 nuevos campamentos mineros han podido aprovechar el cambiante contexto político de Nicaragua así como la pobreza de la comunidad, comprando grandes extensiones de tierra y abriendo la zona a la minería de oro.
Estas acciones conducen a ganancias a corto plazo que tienen consecuencias drásticas y potencialmente irrevocables para la comunidad de montaña; humanos, animales, vegetales y minerales. Durante el año pasado, la tierra que anteriormente se usaba para cultivar cultivos o como hábitat de vida silvestre ha sido deforestada y reutilizada para la industria contaminante y extractiva, dañando la integridad del ecosistema de la comunidad y su patrimonio cultural. Antes y junto a este trasfondo drástico, La Laguna ha sido el hogar de importantes proyectos colectivos en el espiritualidad Indígena y compromiso profundo y amoroso con la Tierra. Junto a agricultores independientes, biólogos, artesanos, danzantes y todo tipo de sanadoras y guías espirituales, un proyecto de agricultura orgánica y ceremonia llamado Rancho Sexto Sol (Chantli Chicuhace Tonatiuah en Nahuatl, nombrado por la profecía Indígena) forman un pequeño pero dedicado círculo de guardianes de la montaña. Durante el año pasado, este circulo creciente han hecho denuncias públicas de las actividades peligrosas ya menudo ilegales del campamento minero. Hemos realizado estudios biológicos para abogar por la conservación de la región biodiversa; hemos continuado nuestro labor en agroecología y ceremonia tradicional. Aunque son esenciales, en última instancia, no son suficientes para defender verdaderamente la tierra a perpetuidad, y para garantizar su conservación, aspiramos a crear una reserva natural privada.
