Connie's Transplant Journey
Donation protected
When I was a young girl, my mom was diagnosed with a rare liver disease (Primary Biliary Cirrhosis ). Throughout the years, a variety of tests were performed and numerous medications were given, but we knew that a day would probably come where my mom would need a liver transplant. Getting on the list was the hard part though, despite the toll this disease can take on the body.
Over the last few years, her liver health and function was more closely monitored by a team of specialists as her disease started to progress at a quicker rate. Regardless of the symptoms and effects she endured from the disease, she was deemed too healthy to get on the transplant list.
On February 21, 2017, my mom was notified that she needed to go to the hospital in San Francisco for further testing as some earlier test results came back to be worrisome. We found out soon after that her liver was failing and also affecting the health of her kidneys.
Her overall health started to decline rapidly and she was getting weaker by the day, which in turn made it possible for her to get on the transplant list. So the search for the perfect donor was set into motion immediately and it became critical to find a healthy liver as soon as possible.
Tuesday, March 7, 2017 she got her liver transplant and relief came over our family. We were overjoyed to see my mom finally get what she needed to be healthy again.
As happy as we are, we know her journey isn't over yet. She still has a long recovery process ahead of her, which will keep her in San Francisco for awhile.
I'm fundraising to help relieve some of the unexpected costs that this ordeal has caused for my parents. My dad has mostly been by my mom's side, traveling back and forth when needed, but also staying in San Francisco most of the time, which has been extremely costly. He'll be staying in SF in an apartment for at least a month more, where my mom will join him once she's strong enough. We all know San Francisco is not a cheap place to be staying! My parents also had to cancel their Mexico vacation that was supposed to take place at the same time that this happened and it was non-refundable.
Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Everyone's love, concern, prayers, and well wishes have been amazing and uplifting! It means so much to us to have the support of so many great people.
Thank you so much for being there for my mom and our family during this time.
