Gentrification in the Lake Merritt neighborhood strikes again! This time displacing a Latina business owner. After 22 years of serving up delicious Mexican cuisine with a family atmosphere, the landlord of Connie's Cantina has raised her rent by 50%. Yes, that's right 50%! He wants her out to bring in one of his friends to open up a "hipper" restaurant, leaving Connie out in the cold. The rent is so high that it is forcing Connie to close her doors by early December.
After years of being bullied by this landlord, including the day he came to tell her the rent was raised by 50%, Connie does not have many options. Without her restaurant she will not have any income, and isn't sure how she will get by and afford her rent as she wants to continue living in her home in Oakland. Connie ideally would love to open another restaurant in the area and in the mean time will be looking for work to sustain.
That's why we've started this GoFundMe. After over 2 decades of Connie giving to her community, it's our turn to give back to her. Please help us raise money for Connie to get on her feet again, pay her bills, and figure out her next steps. 100% of the money raised here will go to Connie. Please support how you can and pass this along to as many folks as possible.
If you want to show some love to Connie in person, or show some support she would love to see you! She's anticipating her last day will be sometime during the first week of December.
