Arnor, Inc. was created to fight the inclusion of conflict minerals in our everyday electronics. These conflict minerals (specifically, Gold and the 3 T’s—Tin, Tantalum, and Tungsten) are mined through child and slave labor in the Congo. The minerals are smuggled out of the country and sold to unsuspecting companies. If you own a cell phone, you might be holding conflict minerals in the palm of your hand!

Most profits from minerals smuggled out the mines go to local warlords in constant conflict with one another. Mine conditions are so dangerous—due to structural collapse, breathing hazards, and local terrorism—that warlords often kidnap citizens and force them to work the mines. Paid labor is not much better: a day's wages only corresponds to a couple dollars in America. 

So what are we doing to help? In 2010, President Obama signed the Dodd-Frank Consumer Protection Act, urging companies like Apple and Intel to inspect their supply chains for conflict minerals.
