Comrades 4 Ciara

Our dear friend Ciara Barry (also our favourite amongst the 6 Barry siblings) has unfortunately contracted cancer for the fourth time. Yes, 4th! Ciara has developed a very aggressive blood cancer called treatment-related High Risk Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). Ciara's treatment within Ireland has unfortunately not been successful.

 

Ciara has now travelled to the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. She is currently undergoing a clinical trial for Car T-Cell Therapy. The opportunity to attend such a clinical trial is a lifeline for Ciara.

 

The cost of the clinical trial and additional medical care within the USA is not insignificant. Through the generosity of many people, multiple fundraisers have already raised close to €350,000.

 

By running the Comrades marathon, I aim to raise 1-2% of that €350,000 with the hope that every €/$/£ will help Ciara along this challenging journey. I will be travelling to South Africa at the end of August to run (mostly run) from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. The race will see me take on 90Km of hilly terrain. The highlights include traversing the Valley of a Thousand Hills and having a 12 hour hard time limit to complete the race.
