Computers for LIFE

My computer does not work! Here at LIFE School in Guatemala, we’re having a problem. You see, we’re a non-profit English Immersion Elementary School – a small community of Indigenous Mayan and International students. We are attempting to provide the kind of education that our wonderful students need and deserve. We are doing all that we can. We really are. But in our technology class, we’re coming up short.

We need to teach our children how to type, how to research and how to Google using reliable equipment.

We have 12 computers and keyboards and they are old. More than a decade old. They are slow. They are unreliable. They can’t be updated, and boy, have we tried.
Since our computer room doesn’t have enough computers for each student, they need to share, and as noted, the computers don’t even work that well in the first place. Students crowd around the small screen, only getting minutes at a time to practice. These few minutes are not enough. These 12 computers are not enough. When it comes to computation, we need to help these students thrive in this technologically driven world. And these students sure are driven. They just need your help.

Oh, and don’t get us started on our only school printer. It is incredibly slow. It constantly jams. And the printer’s drum and expensive toner need to be replaced frequently.
Our projectors are another matter. We had three that were graciously donated to us. But over time, they have worn down. Only one still works, though it overheats to the point that we can only use it for 30 minutes at a time.

So that’s the story. An eager bunch of intellectually curious students whose school needs a bit of help. We know we’re asking a lot. It almost feels like we’re asking the world. But with the right technology equipment, we truly believe we’re putting the world right at our students’ fingertips. And we can’t wait for the world to watch what these amazing children will do. All they need is your help.
