Our first volunteering stop is Rio de Janeiro where we are partnering with Community in Action, a Brazilian-based NGO, to set up a computer lab for the youth in the Complexo do Alemão favela.
Community in Action provides several services to the residents of favelas in Rio. One area in which they need our help is to provide used computers to the youth. Favela residents do not have access to the same quality of education as other Brazilians. This prohibits them from having opportunities to further their education by going to college, or even obtaining the necessary skills to compete in the job market outside of general labor. Community in Action is fighting to cut down on this education gap from multiple angles, one of which is via their computer program. Programs offered range from as "simple" as learning how to use Microsoft Word (which can lead to job opportunities in offices) to as complex as building a website (more advanced skills such as these open many doors for youth). Without a doubt, any computer donated will help to expand Community in Action's reach within the favela by offering more courses to more kids.
One used computer and monitor costs about R$1000 - or $310 USD. Our goal is to raise enough money to buy eight. Our deadline to raise funds is THANKSGIVING DAY. Whether you'd like to donate $5 or the cost of an entire computer, every bit helps.
