Let’s build the Restavek children of Les Cayes, Haiti a modern computer training laboratory! It seems incredible, but it’s true:
According to UNICEF
, as many as 250,000 children- mostly girls aged 5-12 – live as domestic servants, and some treated no better than slaves. Most never go to school and many go hungry. But there’s a bright side:
Opportunities for Communities, Inc. Maranatha School in Les Cayes, Haiti is dedicated to educating these “Restavek” (from the French rester avec, or “to stay with”) children, and over 1,000 have completed elementary school. The children also receive a nutritious meal every day.Technology leapfrogging – a radical idea!
The Maranatha School has been so successful that classes are held twice each day. Now that the Restavek children are allowed to attend school, why not empower them with the technological and problem-solving skills to break free from the Restavek system and become community leaders? Let’s help these unempowered kids to “leapfrog” ahead with the basic computer skills needed to succeed.Nou capab! That’s Haitan for, “We can do it!”
In a country where two thirds live without electric power, OfC’s Maranatha School now has solar electricity, thanks to a grant from United Technologies Corporation! PLEASE watch this video:
And thanks to Ramboll US Corporation and other generous sponsors, Maranatha has collected dozens of used but good computers.Donate now and your generosity will help kids for a lifetime!
