Compost the hell out of Burning Man
Join with us in pioneering IDEATE’s Compost Project, introducing composting on Burning Man playa.

Having reached 4000K we are excited to know we’ve covered the basic costs for making this project happen. Now, the more money we raise, the more compost we can take.  So work with us to make Compost the Burn even bigger and better and help empower thousands of Burning Man goers to achieve a greater level of sustainability, leave no trace and minimize waste.

We appreciate your support!

Problem / opportunity
This year in excess of 60,000 burners will meet, build a city from scratch, like a mirage erected in the middle of Black Rock Desert, and make it home for a week. With lots of people comes lots of waste, and large amounts of compostable matter such as food scraps, soiled paper, and yard trimmings are wasted to landfill.

Goal
In the spirit of Burning Man, IDEATE is committed to sustainability. For the first time in 2016, IDEATE, in collaboration with like-minded Burning Man camps, is eager to introduce a Composting Initiative to the Burning Man playa. A comprehensive program including compost awareness, hands-on education, and the facilities to collect pure compostable matter, placed directly into the funnel of regenerative farming, through the service of Full Circle Compost and Empire Waste Systems.

Plan
We are providing a covered 30 cubic yard dumpster (6,000 gallons) on playa, educational material and workshop to the members of participating camps, and setting up daily compost drop off times with sorting stations supervised by our trained compost team!

Provided sufficient capacity, on the last two days of Burning Man, our compost dumpster and sorting stations will be opened to the community and will accept drop offs from non-contributing camps, on a first come first served basis.

Impact
With the collaboration of small, medium, and large sustainability friendly camps, we aim to provide compost awareness to 2000 or more burners, and pull well over 1000 gallons of pure compost out of landfill this year.   Our long term plan is to roll this program out to a larger Burning Man audience every year.

Target contribution
In order to cover the cost of the program, the target contribution for participating camps is set at $400 per 100 people. Contributions in excess of the cost of this year Composting Program will be used to subsidize this program next year, allowing to grow the impact of the initiative and potentially requiring a lower contribution from participating camps.
