Green Your Burn For A More Sustainable World

Donation protected
Compost is BACK at Burning Man! For the fourth year in a row, IDEATE is leading a composting project to help camps reduce their carbon footprint and turn their food "waste" into juicy, healthy soil.

Burning Man is more than just a festival; It's a place where people can collaborate and support one another in creating the world they want to see. Like a weeklong prototyping lab or growth incubator out in the desert. We at IDEATE want to create a more sustainable world, and we want to put our money (and your money!) where our mouths are by composting on playa. Through this project, we can avoid emitting more than 285,000 lbs of greenhouse gases!* In terms of carbon, that’s like taking 27 cars off the road for one year - from only one week of composting.**

Please consider contributing to help make our composting dreams come true.  Thank you for supporting us. We love you!!!

Why compost at Burning Man?

This year more than 70,000 burners will meet in Nevada to build a city from scratch, like a mirage erected in the middle of the Black Rock Desert. For one week, we'll call Black Rock City home. But just like in the "default" world, with lots of people comes *lots* of waste, and large amounts of compostable matter like food scraps and soiled paper. Most food waste ends up in a landfill with all of our other trash, where it emits methane, a potent greenhouse gas that's contributing to our climate crisis. But there's a better way, called composting, that turns our trash to treasure!

How does it work?

For the fourth year in a row, IDEATE, in collaboration with like-minded Burning Man camps and other partners, will provide an opportunity to compost on playa. Our program includes compost awareness and hands-on education, along with the facilities and logistical support needed to collect pure compostable matter, which is then retrieved, processed and sent to farms to support healthy soil and healthy crops. To learn more about composting and how it works, you can watch this video  .

This year we are providing THREE 30 cubic yard Compostainers (6,000 gallon dumpsters) on playa to the playa. We will designate daily compost drop off times with sorting stations supervised by our trained compost volunteer teams.

Our impact:

We love working with other camps on playa, small, medium or large. Last year, we collected compost from 12,000 burners, comprising 190 camps, equaling 12,000 gallons of compost and reducing an estimated 190,000 pounds of Greenhouse Gases! That’s equivalent to taking 18.3 cars off the road for a whole year in terms of carbon! And to think, that’s just one week of composting.

This year, we want to reach 18,000 burners, collect 18,000 gallons of compost, and have an even greater impact!

How you can help:

We do not require camps to pay in order to participate. However, in order to cover the costs of the program, we suggest a minimum target contribution of $4 per person. Your support will be greatly appreciated and your impact will ripple out into the world! And if you're not participating, we'd still appreciate your help!

Your contributions will go towards procuring the compost dumpsters, purchasing gloves for those who don't want a sticky mess on their hands, and hauling the compost to a nearby facility to be turned into nutrient-rich soil. Yum!
