Helping SANE Australia Support Complex Trauma and Long-Term Mental health Conditions

Many mental health challenges are not short-term or easily resolved, and for some people the impact is long-lasting and deeply physiological. Complex PTSD and chronic anxiety disorders such as GAD are strongly correlated with nervous system dysregulation, where the body remains stuck in survival responses for extended periods of time. Over years, this can reshape how a person functions, copes and relates to the world, affecting emotional, physical and social wellbeing. Because these conditions are largely invisible and physiological rather than outwardly obvious, they are often misunderstood as emotional weakness or something a person should simply "push through," rather than recognised as a nervous system injury that requires specialised and long-term care.

Common Symptoms of this condition

  • In anxiety and trauma conditions, you feel anxious even when safe and nothing is wrong
  • experience chronic tiredness, fatigue and exhaustion due to body been in high alert and fight or fight for long periods.
  • constant state of restlessness muscle twitching/spasms due to body exhaustion
  • emotional shutdown when overwhelmed
  • the body feels constantly on guard and hypervigilant looking for threats and danger even when safe
  • this is the body being stuck in a survival state trying to survive
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Experience trouble sleeping and chronic insomnia
  • Experience chronic physical sensations such as constant heart palpitations, tightness in the chest and throat, shortness of breath, shaking and trembling, muscle tension and nausea, migraines and headaches
  • Experience cognitive issues such as reduced concentration, short term and long-term memory loss, dissociation or mental 'blankness' or feeling detachment from the body
  • Withdrawal from activities, social and society due to fear of been judged or misunderstood

Many people that suffer from mental health issues such as these, self-medicate with drugs and alcohol. While that can help in the short term, once the substance has worn off the symptoms are often amplified, leading to a rebound of heightened debilitating physical and emotional distress to the individual.

I am raising funds for SANE Australia because they support people living with complex and long-term mental health conditions – the kind that don’t fit neatly into short-term treatment models or a single diagnosis.

SANE provides connection, advocacy and specialised understanding for individuals and families who often fall through the gaps in traditional services and crisis-focused systems.

Traditional mental health services are often designed around short-term symptoms or single-diagnosis models, which do not fully address the physiological nature of trauma deeply embedded in the nervous system. Nervous-system informed care recognises that healing requires safety, body regulation, and long-term support rather than quick intervention. Many people living with complex trauma falls through service gaps because the condition is chronic, relational, and deeply embodied, not temporary or episodic.

This fundraiser is both about raising awareness and supporting organisations that understand the connection between trauma and conditions such as Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), where chronic anxiety becomes fused with the body’s long‑term survival responses. When anxiety and trauma interact over many years, the nervous system can remain in a prolonged threat state, making recovery extremely difficult without specialist, nervous‑system‑informed care.

For families like mine, I've personally witness members of my family and had my own traumatic experience with this condition, which is now managed well and stabilised with self-care strategies, nervous system regulation and medication. However, families like mine and members in my family still struggle on a day-to-day basis from debilitating related complex mental health conditions. These people require ongoing family support and assistance from medical professionals. The impact is long-term, layered and often unseen — affecting the ability to participate in daily life, maintain stability, and feel safe in our own bodies. Your support helps ensure that people living with complex trauma and complex mental health issues are no longer overlooked or invisible. Awareness is the first step toward meaningful change, and compassion is what allows that change to take root.
