After the first race of the 2023/24 season with my coach (one of my greatest supporters, and my personal hype man).
My name is Luci Schmidt, and I’m fundraising so I can compete in back to back races in the USA to better my chances of being selected for the World Junior Championships (hosted in Italy). Attending these races would allow me an opportunity to race more intense competition, something I would no doubt be faced with at World Juniors. Not only does this heighten my odds of being selected and better prepare me for tough competition, it can also help me become a stronger and more well-rounded individual; as a young athlete, I am always searching for opportunities to improve my skills and gain new experiences.
Travelling to America would make this my first time skiing outside of Canada, which on its own is an amazing experience, however, this is also not a cheap endeavour. So far we estimate that travelling to the US is going to cost around $7,000, while World Juniors could be another $10,000. Flights, accommodation, lift tickets, and coaching fees are some of the hardest hitters. Meals, van travel/gas, and race entry fees not to be forgotten about on top of that. My parents are confident we can make it work, but really looking into it we realized we have a lot on our plate.
Last season I took a backseat when it came to things like this as it was my first year back on snow since my knee injury. This season my goal was clear from the start; attend more races, ski fast, and be selected for World Juniors. At only 19 years old it would be a great honour to represent my country in the sport I love, and I believe with determination I can meet my goals. As it stands right now, with four slots available, I’m second in line to be selected based on ranking for u21 in Canada. However, throughout the years it has been clear that money is no small matter for my family in the ski racing world, which is why I have started this fundraiser.
No donation is too small, to receive help at all is something I’m extremely grateful for. To see someone extend their kindness to allow me the opportunities to compete and follow my passion is overwhelming. I know I’m not next in line for the Olympics, but I believe World Juniors is the first stepping stone to one day reaching that goal.
Thank you in advance for anything you may give,
Luci Schmidt
