A Place for Us: A Black Led Community Conversation
“Sitting at the table doesn’t make you a diner unless you eat some of whats on the plate.”
-Malcom X
What we are about: The time has come for us, the people of Colorado Springs, to learn what is needed to systematically fight racism in our community from people TRULY in the community system! Our mission is to invite six leaders in the black community of Colorado Springs to speak on a paneled community event regarding their perspective based on their roles on what is needed to continue the fight for change in our city while being fairly compensated for their time. The moderators of the event will reach out to black leaders as potential speakers representing a variety of fields to include but not limited to: teachers, healthcare, law, faith based leaders, systems leaders, LGBTQI+ community leaders and local representatives.
Why we are about it: Our goal is to raise at least $300-$400 dollars to compensate each speaker for two hours of their time to answer questions submitted by members of the community in regards to systematic changes in the fight against racism in a panel setting at a central location in Colorado Springs. Any amount raised above the goal of $1500-$2000 will be equally dispersed among the panel speakers. If a speaker chooses not to accept the monetary compensation for their time, the amount allotted for their time will be donated to local community organizations such as The Citizens Project, The Chinook center or The Empowerment Solidarity Network. The moderators of the event will ask for questions submitted by the community ahead of time as well as facilitate a “question and answer” portion of the event. Once the money is raised to ensure fair compensation for the time and energy of the speakers, the moderators can move forward in setting up this community event!
