I have come to this platform in hopes of finding help for my brother Toby. He has horrible head and brain injuries sustained from being assaulted and is now currently homeless. He needs all the help he can get. My mother, my other brother and myself all work full time and are struggling to put together the resources to keep Toby off the street and get him proper medical care. Anything, anything at all would be a tremendous help and be so much appreciated. Even the smallest donation. Or even just share this story with your friends and family. Thank you so much. Two weeks ago Toby was attacked in jail while he was awaiting a competency interview. Toby, my brother, has schizophrenia. He was put in general population where an extremely violent man decided he didn't like the look of Toby and nearly beat him to death. Toby was beaten unconscious and the beating continued for several minutes while this man continuously bashed Toby's head. He is lucky to be alive. Toby suffered a broken nose, several facial fractures, two black eyes, a horrific gash going from the middle of his forehead to the middle of his scalp and his whole head was swollen when I saw him 3 days after the attack. I broke down sobbing when I saw in person how badly he was injured. I was and remain terrified that there is permanent brain injury.
Toby had been back and forth between the State Hospital and County Jail for the past year due to bed space and being interviewed by professionals to determine his mental health and mental competency. Just last week, after the attack, they abruptly released him to the street. None of his family has the ability to immediately take him into their home. He is homeless. Toby can now barely speak, has severe difficulty forming words and is still having issues with balance. He needs to be seen by proper medical staff for severe brain trauma. He needs CAT Scans, MRI's, and examinations from the Traumatic Brain Injury department. He will also need to go into the traumatic brain injury rehabilitation program for his difficulty speaking. Most of all he needs help with housing. He cannot work in this state. His mental illness is severe and impinges on his ability to work a regular job and find housing. Ultimately we would like to find Toby a home but right now we just want a safe place for him to stay and to get the proper medical treatment and quickly. Toby has had an extremely difficult life, all we want is his health and his safety.
