Support the Sakya Sujata Children Welfare Trust in Bodhgaya, India: Empowering the Future Through Education

In the heart of Bodhgaya, India—where the Buddha attained enlightenment—lies the Sakya Sujata Children Welfare Trust, a beacon of hope for 160 underprivileged children. This school, located next to the Sujata Stupa where the legendary Sujata lived, offers a unique opportunity to honor both history and the future. Sujata, the young girl who offered the Buddha water when he was on the brink of death, is a symbol of compassion, kindness, and generosity. Her act of giving not only saved the Buddha’s life but also allowed the teachings of the Dharma to spread throughout the world. She gave the Buddha his last meal, Kir rice, before his enlightenment, ensuring that he could fulfill his vow to teach compassion, generosity, and loving-kindness to all beings.

Inspired by Sujata's selfless compassion, the Sakya Sujata Children Welfare Trust aims to provide a better future for children in Bodhgaya who would otherwise have limited access to education. This school serves as a lifeline, offering these children a safe environment, quality education, and the hope of a brighter tomorrow.

A Small Act, A Big Difference

The Trust is currently running a fundraising campaign to raise $15,361 to fund the entire year of education for 160 children. This amount will cover the costs of teaching, learning materials, and basic school supplies.

In the United States, the average cost of educating a child in a public school is around $15,000 per year. This includes expenses for teachers, school infrastructure, and educational resources. However, in India, $15,361 will educate 160 children for an entire year, covering their educational needs at a fraction of the cost.

This disparity in educational costs between the U.S. and India is striking. For example:

$15,000 could cover:
The cost of an average American family’s annual grocery bill.
Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in many parts of the U.S.
A family vacation to an international destination.
Student loan payments for many American graduates.
The annual cost of health insurance for an individual in the U.S.
Meanwhile, in India, this same amount can educate 160 children, providing them with the foundation they need to break the cycle of poverty, rise above hardship, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

What Your Donation Will Support

The $15,361 we aim to raise will directly cover essential costs for these 160 children for an entire year. Specifically, your generous donation will go toward:

Teacher Salaries: Funding the salaries for 8 dedicated teachers who provide a safe, supportive, and effective learning environment for the students.

School Uniforms: Providing uniforms for all the children, ensuring they have the proper attire to attend school with dignity and pride.

Textbooks & Notebooks: Supplying the necessary learning materials, including textbooks and notebooks, so that each student has the resources they need to succeed.

Shoes & Warm Clothes: Ensuring the children are provided with proper footwear and warm clothing, which is especially important during the colder months.

Teaching Materials: Supplying essential teaching materials for the staff to create engaging, hands-on lessons that support the children's learning.

Learning Materials: Providing additional learning tools like writing supplies, stationery, educational games, and other resources to support the children’s intellectual growth.

A Growing Need and Ambitions for the Future

The Sakya Sujata Children Welfare Trust is not just about providing education—it is about building a brighter future for children in Bodhgaya who are in desperate need of support. Currently, the Trust is also supporting 20 orphans, providing them with clothes and food. However, the need is much greater. Recently, the Trust had to turn away 40 children because it lacked the financial resources to provide for them. This heartbreaking reality highlights the urgent need for further funding to support more children.

The school is currently operating out of an older, inadequate building with just 5 classrooms. It serves grades 1 through 8 and teaches a wide curriculum including math, science, reading, writing, English, Sanskrit, Hindi, social science, drawing, yoga, and meditation. While the school has aspirations to expand and create an official, legitimate schoolhouse to serve 600 children, the resources are simply not available at this time.

Unfortunately, the Trust is also unable to provide food for all the children. While 20 orphans receive free food, the rest of the students must come to school without the benefit of meals. This is a gap the Trust hopes to fill in the future, but for now, it remains a challenge due to limited finances.

Your Donation Can Make a Real Difference

Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will directly support these children and the incredible work being done by the Sakya Sujata Children Welfare Trust. In honoring Sujata’s legacy of compassion and kindness, you will help ensure that these children not only receive an education, but also the tools to carry forward the values of compassion, generosity, and loving-kindness in their own lives.

By donating, you are making an investment in their futures and the well-being of a community that is striving to rise above the challenges it faces. Your generosity will help equip them with the education they need to realize their full potential and contribute to the well-being of their families and society.

Join Us in This Act of Compassion

Just as Sujata’s small but profound act of kindness helped the Buddha achieve enlightenment and set forth his teachings of love and wisdom, your donation will allow these children to grow in wisdom, compassion, and hope. Together, we can help transform their futures.

Thank you for your generosity. Your kindness has the power to change lives and uplift an entire community.
