Compassion and Prayers for Pepe

Compassion and Hope for Pepe

My friend, Pepe (some of you know her as Laurel), is hands down the sweetest, most caring, fully selfless, and funniest person I have known in my life.

Since graduating from the University of Georgia, Pepe married the love of her life, had 2 beautiful children, and had a full and happy life fulfilling her dream of helping disadvantaged kids through teaching.

I think that it’s important to call out that she has spent her adult life teaching in underserved areas (both in Macon and Savannah, GA), with the sole purpose of making a difference in the lives of kids who just need someone in their corner—someone who truly cares about them and their future.  Pepe has inspired countless kids to focus on learning, to get an education, and to make a better life for themselves.  She cares on a level that many of us may never understand.

Several years ago, her world came crashing down when her husband suffered a fatal heart attack after coaching their son’s ball team.  Ever the optimist, Pepe soldiered on as a single mom on her teaching salary.  She built a new version of her and her family’s life, and did it with a huge smile, an oversized sense of humor, and beautiful memories of her husband.  It has not been an easy journey for Pepe and her kids, and they miss Mike every day.  But they face life with a smile, kindness, and love.

Now, the absolute unthinkable has happened.  Pepe was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  In true fashion, she is most concerned about her children, family and friends.  She is fighting!  She has chemo sessions every two weeks, and now another challenge is how to continue working with the chemo treatments and sick days while providing for her middle school son and high school daughter.

Through all of sickness and chemo, Pepe HAS to continue working in order to have income and insurance for her and her children while she fights this wicked disease.

Pepe would NEVER ask for help, but she is the first to offer a hand to anyone in need, and that is why I am writing this plea.  If you are financially able, and feel moved to do, I am asking that you please donate to help make the coming months a little less stressful for Pepe.

Our goal is to raise $30,000 to help defray her medical out-of-pocket expenses and provide some assistance with living expenses for her and her children, and we would love your help to do so.

Whether you are moved and able to contribute, or just took the time to read about this special person, please pass this along to your friends, coworkers, or anyone who might be willing and able help.

Pepe would also appreciate your prayers, giving your kids and loved ones an extra hug, and sharing a smile or act of kindness with someone in need.

Thank you,
Suzy
