Dear Friends, Family, and Beloved Community,
It is with a heavy heart that we share with the community that Lupe’s father, Pedro, has been diagnosed with throat cancer (Laryngeal cancer) and is currently undergoing Chemotherapy and radiation treatment of his cancer. Pedro’s cancer diagnosis has been very painful for Lupe and her family.
Family is extremely important to Lupe and she would do anything to help her family. Any time a family member is sick it is an incredibly difficult and trying time emotionally and financially and for Lupe and her family this already difficult time has been further complicated due to their undocumented legal status. It has been a laborious process for Lupe and her family to navigate the medical system, find informational and supportive resources in Spanish, and try to support the household while paying for necessary, but expensive, medical treatment. As friends of Lupe, we are starting this GoFundMe to raise funds to help cover the cost of medical bills and living expenses while Lupe’s father undergoes treatment for throat cancer.
Many of us in communities throughout California, and particularly members of the San Diego and Merced communities, have had the pleasure of meeting Lupe and getting to know the caring, wise, fierce, outspoken young leader that she is.
For those of us who know Lupe personally we know that she is always the first to give herself to others whether through lending a supportive ear to a friend, coaching youth to help them through the trials and tribulations of the transition into adulthood, and lending her voice, leadership, and personal story to the fight for justice for undocumented students and communities and people of color in California. We also know that she is deeply humble and this sometimes prevents her from reaching out and asking for the help she needs and so readily gives to others.
For those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting Lupe, she is a young undocumented woman from San Diego who has given so much of herself over the past 10 years to advocate for healing for youth of color, to expand healthcare access to undocumented children and adults, and now in her most recent venture to provide healing-centered coaching to Black, Indigenous, youth of color and undocumented youth! Lupe began community organizing when she was 14 as a youth leader in the statewide #Health4All campaign to expand medical health insurance to cover undocumented youth under age 18. Since then she has used her story and leadership as an undocumented young person to help uplift other undocumented youth, advocate for policy changes to help youth of color grow and thrive, and served as a youth ambassador for a philanthropic foundation to create leadership pathways for youth of color! Lupe is a beloved sister, daughter, mentor, colleague, friend, and organizer who needs some financial support from the communities that she has so dedicatedly served over the past 10 years.
Her father is currently undergoing an intensive 5 days a week treatment with Chemotherapy and radiation for 6 weeks to help minimize a mass that has grown on his voice box. Her father isn’t able to work at the moment with his illness and his intensive treatment schedule, but, because of his legal status, he is ineligible to receive disability which further exacerbates her family’s financial struggles during this time.
Lupe has done so much to help people throughout California access healthcare, and now we have the chance to support Lupe and her father and their family as they struggle to access quality healthcare!!! They need our support with financial resources to help the family cover medical costs and living expenses while he is undergoing treatment. Especially due to the lack of financial resources available to support undocumented communities, we are hoping that generosity from the community will help relieve this pressure while Pedro is undergoing treatment.

El diagnóstico de cáncer de Pedro ha sido muy doloroso para Lupe y su familia. Cada vez que un miembro de su familia se enferma, es difícil emocionalmente y financieramente. En esta circunstancia se ha complicado aún más debido a el estatus legal de su papa. Para Lupe y su familia navegar por el sistema médico, encontrar recursos informativos en español, y tratar de apoyar a la familia mientras pagan el tratamiento médico necesario no ha sido fácil. Como amigos de Lupe, estamos comenzando este GoFundMe para recaudar fondos para ayudar a cubrir el costo de las facturas médicas y los gastos de manutención mientras el padre de Lupe se somete a un tratamiento para el cáncer de garganta.
Las personas que hemos tenido el placer de conocer a Lupe conocemos a la joven líder cariñosa, sabia, y feroz que es. Para aquellos de nosotros que conocemos a Lupe personalmente, sabemos que ella es siempre la primera en entregarse a los demás, ya sea prestando apoyo a un amigo/a, entrenando a los jóvenes para que superen las pruebas y tribulaciones de la transición a la edad adulta y prestándoles voz, liderazgo e historia personal en la lucha por la justicia para los estudiantes indocumentados, y las comunidades de color en California. También sabemos que es profundamente humilde y esto a veces le impide acercarse y pedir la ayuda que necesita pero que tan fácilmente da a los demás. Para aquellos que aún no han tenido el placer de conocer a Lupe, ella es una joven indocumentada de San Diego que ha dado mucho de sí misma en los últimos 10 años para abogar para expandir el acceso a la atención médica a las comunidades indocumentadas niños y adultos, y ahora en su trabajo más reciente brinda capacitación centrada en la curación a jóvenes negros, indígenas, de color y jóvenes indocumentados. Lupe comenzó a organizar en la comunidad cuando tenía 14 años como líder juvenil en la campaña estatal # Health4All para expandir el seguro médico para cubrir a los jóvenes indocumentados menores de 18 años.
