Keith has been a part of our family since 2015, and my husband Jarad and I consider him and his wife Val some of our closest family and friends. Over the years, Keith and Val have dedicated themselves to providing traditional medicine and spiritual care to numerous tribal communities across the Midwest and Canada. Their commitment to helping others has touched countless lives.

Recently, Keith and Val shared with a small group of friends and family that Keith has been diagnosed with invasive colonic adenocarcinoma, or colon cancer. One significant cancer growth and several lymph nodes need to be removed immediately, as this condition has the potential to spread quickly. After a recent consultation with his surgeon, Keith was advised that half of his colon will need to be removed. While it’s not yet certain if chemotherapy will be required after surgery, it remains a possibility depending on further testing. Keith is being told to plan for at least two months off work, but this could be longer if chemotherapy is needed. While we are hopeful for a positive outcome, the road ahead will be challenging.

As many know, Keith and Val’s journey providing traditional medicine is done under contracts with various tribal communities, but unfortunately, this work does not come with health coverage. The financial burden of medical bills, travel for treatment, recovery time, and possible follow-up care is significant.
