COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR ABUELO MASHI

Born in Peru, Abuelo Mashi (Macedonio) has lived and worked in Chile for the past 20 years. This was hardly a choice. Like so many immigrants across the globe, intergenerational poverty forced his departure in order to find better opportunities for himself, his family, and community. For over two decades, well into his 80's, he worked as a farmhand and groundskeeper. Thankfully, with the help of his granddaughters, Briseida and Lesly, and his son, Pedro, Abuelo Mashi's years of hard labor have come to an end and he has returned home. However, those years weren't without cost. Arduous manual labor and lack of medical care have taken a drastic toll on his body, leaving him in need of a major knee operation.
The harsh reality is that Abuelo Mashi's immediate and extended family have been affected by the same intergenerational poverty, and continue living in financial precarity. Despite their best efforts, the family has been unable to raise the necessary funds to assist Abuelo Mashi with his long-term health and living conditions. Currently, Briseida and Pedro are the only two family members with enough resources to support him. And they can't do it alone. That is why we're seeking community support to get our abuelito the help he needs.
At 87, he is enduring significant pain in both of his knees and shoulders. His right knee, especially, has completely lost its cartilage, which makes it difficult for him to walk and move about independently. After being away for over 20 years, Abuelo Mashi is ineligible for health insurance in his home country of Peru. Therefore, we are forced to pay out of pocket for all of his medical expenses. We know that he needs knee surgery, rehabilitation, pain medication, and possibly future procedures to address the pain in his shoulders.
Additionally, his home doesn't have a shower, or even a door to the bathroom. He currently bathes in an extremely rustic environment: water must be heated on the stove and then transported to a large basin, into which Abuelo must climb -- at great peril -- to be able to clean himself. All of the funds we raise will go directly towards his medical expenses and upgrading his bathroom to a more accessible state.
Abuelo Mashi has dedicated his life and energy towards uplifting his family and his community. Now it's time for us to show up for him and improve the quality of the rest of his beautiful life.

Nacido en Perú, Abuelo Mashi (Macedonio) ha vivido y trabajado en Chile durante los últimos 20 años. Esta no fue una decisión fácil. Como tantos inmigrantes a través del mundo, la pobreza intergeneracional forzó su partida en búsqueda de mejores oportunidades para sí mismo, su familia, y comunidad. Por más de dos décadas, y hasta después de cumplir 80 años, trabajó como labriego y vigilante. Gracias a la ayuda de sus nietas Lesly y Briseida, y su hijo Pedro, los años de trabajo arduo han terminado para el Abuelo Mashi y por fin ha regresado a su hogar. Esto le causa dificultad al caminar y al moverse independientemente. Después de haber estado fuera del país por 20 años, el Abuelo Mashi no califica fácilmente para seguros médicos en el Perú. Es por eso que nos vemos forzados a pagar sus gastos médicos por cuenta propia. Sabemos que necesitará una cirugía a su rodilla, rehabilitación, medicamentos, y posiblemente futuros procedimientos para mejorar el dolor en sus hombros.
Adicionalmente, su casa no cuenta con una ducha, y tampoco una puerta apropiada para el aseo. Actualmente, el Abuelo se baña en un ambiente extremadamente rústico: el agua se debe calentar en la estufa, ser transportada a un lavabo separado en el cual el Abuelo se ve forzado a trepar, arriesgándose peligrosamente para poder limpiarse. Todos los fondos que se reúnan irán directamente a sus gastos médicos y a actualizar su baño a un estado más accesible.
El Abuelo Mashi ha dedicado su vida y energía al apoyo de su familia y comunidad. Ahora es nuestro turno de ver por él y mejorar su calidad de vida por el resto de sus bellos días.
