For 35 years, Mr. Janke has been a steady presence in classrooms across Cowlitz County. Since earning his teaching certificate in 1986, Mr. Janke (JJ, as he is fondly called) has been a fixture of the Kelso School District—a teacher who never lets rain, snow, or the physical barriers from cerebral palsy keep him from students. He has been a positive role model for generations of Kelso students, setting an example of will and determination in overcoming challenges. Mr. Janke is a true Hilander.

While many career educators retire with a pension, the reality of substitute teaching is that those same retirement benefits aren't available. After 35 years of service, Mr. Janke finds himself without a financial safety net; retirement is an impossibility. He currently substitutes, at minimum, six days a month to support himself and his 99-year-old mother, Rose.

The Mission: A Community-Funded Pension. We are setting out to create a "community pension" for a man who has given his life to our students. Longevity: The funds raised will be invested and managed by a former student, now a professional financial advisor offering to manage the funds long term. Sustainability: By investing these funds, Mr. Janke will be provided with a steady monthly income to cover daily living expenses, wheelchair maintenance, and continued care of his mother.

We Are Kelso! Nine years ago, this community changed Mr. Janke’s life by providing him with a motorized wheelchair so he could maintain his independence and continue working as a substitute teacher. Today, we are asking for something even more lasting, the dignity of a secure retirement future he has more than earned.
