Community neighbor in need

John and Karen moved next door to me 5 years ago, fulfilling their 20 year dream of owning a home.  While Karen was making the inside, their home, John was outside building, fixing, and grooming their yard. We would stand in his backyard looking at the lake in front of him smiling like a little kid and saying, “I can’t believe this is ours”. Soon enough, John and  Karen would go out in their canoe or just sit by the lake discussing all their future plans.  Two years ago, a stomach pain took John to the hospital, and left with the devastating diagnosis of colon cancer.  If he hadn’t told me, I wouldn’t have known.  Because he couldn’t work anymore, John would spend 8 hours a day working outside, occasionally going inside for awhile cause he was wiped out.  John is stubborn and refused to give in, instead smiling and assuring Karen that they would both live out their dreams While trying a new ice cream place every weekend of every season.  They took long walks, drives, and shopped all year for their joined passion of Halloween decorating.  Last September,  the cancer spread to the liver and stents were put in.  It all went downhill as stents had to be regularly changed due to infection, and they were forced to slow down but never quit. John is brave and kept telling us it would all workout and would continue to live and work on their dream house.  After many hospital visits in the last few months, without Karen’s daily visits of support and love (f’ing covid), Karen and John were delivered the news two weeks ago that all treatment, including chemo, would cease and John was sent home on hospice. Though there are a few hours of hospice care, Karen is his full time caregiver. Her job as a dental asst. is opening on 6/7 but she is afraid to leave him, worried that he’ll leave her  he was given 2 months.  John is weak, Karen is devastated and worried how life goes on after John. Most of you don’t know Karen and John, but I know them to be a loving, caring, and giving friends and neighbors.   Money, as with most, is tight and times are uncertain for all. They need our help and ANYTHING will be appreciated.
